Kimberly Crest House and Gardens, Redlands Roadtrippers

kimberly crest house & gardens

One of the first pioneers of Redlands, Cornelia A. Hill, built the estate in 1897. I don’t know who she was, but she had to come with some serious cash to build such a marvelous place — so, she must have been important. So, not long ago, I had a bit of business to do and found myself with hours to meander through the town of Redlands. That always confused me, but then later, I understood her meaning. When she goes shopping, and there are plenty of examples, she will spend hours looking at this and peering at that. Redlands is a wonderful town to visit, but I have not spent much time there.

The fountain, “Venus Rising from the Sea”, became a gathering place for family photographs and captivated the Victorian spirit. Docent-guided House Tours are 45 minutes in duration and begin on the half-hour. Standard group size is 8 per tour but on occasion may include up to 12 guests. Given the setting and group format, children must be at least 9 years old to be admitted on the standard tour. For field trips and educational tours, please see our “Group or Bus Tour” section below.

In 1905, John Alfred Kimberly, a co-founder of the Kimberly-Clark paper company, purchased the home to escape the Wisconsin winters, giving the family name to the property. When the Kimberly family purchased the property in 1905, Mrs Kimberly had the Italian gardens installed on the property. The overall property consists of the main residence (a large 7,000 square foot dwelling), a carriage house, the formal Italian gardens, and several acres of orange groves. Kimberly Crest is open to the public to walk and explore the grounds. For the comfort and peace of mind of all guests, pets are not allowed on site without advanced permission.

Here’s what will be featured during Kimberly Crest’s Second Sunday in July.

Kimberly Crest is an estate of  restorative beauty and welcoming hospitality. Located just two miles south of historic downtown Redlands, our gates are open weekdays and Sundays for guests of all ages to find solace and inspiration in the well-manicured gardens. We are closed on Saturdays for private events and on most major holidays. The house was built in 1897 for Mrs Cornelia A. Hill, one of the pioneers of Redlands.

This garden features a rose lined path from the pergola, a heart-shaped boxwood filled with roses and the “Shy Girl” statue. It remains a place of quiet reflection and comfort for many visitors today. We book only one event a day so you will be the only ones on property during your selected package timeframe. Kimberly Crest will be closed to the public on the day of your event. Guests will park in the parking lot at the bottom of Kimberly Crest.

For more information about hosting a private event at Kimberly Crest, click here. Our outdoor venue accommodates up to 200 guests seated at tables and 250 guests in theater-style seating. Kimberly Crest House and Gardens sits on over 6 acres and features a Victorian-style chateau and Italian Renaissance gardens.

After purchasing the property, the Kimberly's had Italian gardens installed around the property. No, the Kimberly Crest House is one of those estates that is a vast, stunningly crafted structure where the visitor expects a lord or lady to saunter down the billion stairs in the front garden to see who is approaching. The three-story Victorian mansion was designed in the Châteauesque style by Oliver Perry Dennis and Lyman Farwell, a Los Angeles-based partnership.[5] The building contains over 7,000 square feet (650 m2) of floor space. A near replica, now known as The Magic Castle, was designed by the same architects and erected in Hollywood[6] in 1909.

Hours

The sun was up, the wind was down, and it was a perfect day to explore a place I had never visited. As I wandered the estate's grounds, I was a bit nervous in case I was approached by the Royal Guard or a security officer. Yes, that family brought the world the products that make us all much easier to be around. Facial tissues, hygiene products, toilet paper, disposable diapers, baby wipes, and so much more that we need to take a moment to thank them. If not, perhaps the lady of the house would have been correct about the commoner and the odor — just saying. Then in 1905, John Alfred Kimberly of the Kimberly-Clark paper company purchased the property.

The house was built in 1897 and is now owned and operated by Kimberly-Shirk Association, a non-Profit organization. All proceeds from weddings at the venue go to the preservation of the house and garden. Kimberly Crest House and Gardens is an exquisite French château-style Victorian mansion located in Redlands, California (San Bernardino County in the Inland Empire). It’s a unique destination and not-so-hidden gem for visitors looking to explore its beautiful gardens, learn about its fascinating history, and capture stunning photos of the estate.

Young ladies can enjoy a magical day full of activities like dressing up in their favorite princess costumes, enjoying tea and snacks, making crafts, and taking photos. Personal use photography rentals are by appointment only, and a variety of hourly rates are offered. Kimberly Crest is the perfect location for engagement photos, family portraits, and more. Kimberly Crest offers several different packages to fit your photography needs. Mary Kimberly Shirk, John Alfred Kimberly’s daughter who had been widowed, was the last Kimberly to live in the home.

I have a purpose in mind, such as the Orange Street Alley, and go there to experience it. The current price (at the time of writing) is $15.00 for adults, $12.00 for seniors/active military/veteran/student, and $5.00 for children ages 6-12. The architecture of the mansion has been described in different ways. It is at once a French château-style 3-story home with tall towers and turrets, and also a Victorian mansion as is common to Redlands, California. The Carriage House was built for the family horses and carriages and had a small apartment on the top floor for the caretaker. In 1897 the cost to construct both the home and Carriage House was $10,000.

In 1963 there was a community effort to raise money to match a federal grant to purchase Prospect Park (a 39 acre botanical garden east of and adjacent to Kimberly Crest) for the City of Redlands. To motivate support for this worthwhile project, Mrs. Shirk promised to give her home to the “people of Redlands” if the needed money was raised. The following year the Kimberly-Shirk Association was formed, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and sharing Kimberly Crest. After Mr. Kimberly passed away, the Kimberly’s daughter Mary Kimberly-Shirk had a rose garden built to ease her mother’s grief and named it “Grandmother’s Rose Garden”.

Plus the views are outstanding. We specialize in lighting the grounds for evening events. This house also serves as an event venue; company functions, birthdays, weddings, divorces, and more can be celebrated here and tours with appointments. With events like Princesses at the Castle and Christmas Tree Lighting, there’s something special about visiting the estate all year round!

Weekend Events($700 – $750 Per Hour)

Upon her death in 1979, by her wishes, Mary Kimberly Shirk donated the home to “the people of Redlands” and established the Kimberly-Shirk Association to run the home and gardens to this day. The property was sold, in 1905, to members of the Kimberly family (John Alfred Kimberly, and his wife, Helen Cheney Kimberly), known for co-founding the Kimberly-Clark paper company. This is a sprawling estate with beautiful gardens, interesting history, and plenty of photo ops. The third floor, which is not included on the public tour, has additional bedrooms and a screened sleeping porch that would have been used in the hot summer months. Kimberly Crest, a picturesque French chateau style home built in 1897, is a well-preserved example of the Victorian Era in California.

Terence Hernstrom, director of gardens and grounds, revives and designs the breath-taking gardens today. The gardens include never ending Mediterranean borders, cascading fountains, lily and koi ponds, multiple terraces, curved stairways and engulfing orange groves - all reminiscent of Renaissance Italy. Begin your happily-ever-after at our enchanting 125-year-old landmark conveniently situated adjacent to beautiful Prospect Park. With acres of Italian gardens and the Victorian era French Chateau in the background, Kimberly Crest is an unforgettable setting for your special day. The 7,000 square foot, three-story chateau sits on a six and one quarter acre estate two miles south of downtown Redlands. The house’s unique features include a French revival parlor complete with gilt furniture and silk damask wall coverings.

The Kimberly Crest House Tour includes a docent guided tour of the first and second floors of the petite chateau while guests learn about the families of Kimberly Crest. The tours also includes a visit to the Carriage House to see the latest of the rotating exhibits anzd end in the Carriage House Gift Shop. Kimberly Crest House & Gardens is a 6-acre estate in Redlands, California featuring a Victorian Chateau and Italian Renaissance styled gardens. In 1905 the home was purchased by Helen Cheney Kimberly and her husband John Alfred Kimberly. Mrs. Kimberly added the gardens and decorated the interior of the home as you find it today. After the Kimberlys’ death, the estate was inherited by their daughter, Mary Kimberly-Shirk.

Entry inside the house can only be accessed if a group tour or a grand entrance are added on. In 1963 there was a community effort to raise money to match a Federal grant to purchase Prospect Park (a 39-acre botanical park east of and adjacent to Kimberly Crest) for the City of Redlands. To motivate support for this worthwhile project, Mrs. Shirk promised to give her home to the “people of Redlands” if the needed money was raised – and the incentive worked, with the park being acquired in 1968. This French château-style Victorian mansion is a registered California Historical Landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It seems Mrs. Shirk had a strong sense of community and purpose. Before her passing, she challenged the city of Redlands to find the cash to purchase the land around the estate and turn it into botanical gardens for the citizens to enjoy.

The second floor was the personal living area for the family and includes a mezzanine with two bedrooms on each side as well as a conservatory.

For those requiring special accommodations, they may be driven to the top of the house to be dropped off. We encourage informal picture-taking using personal devices to share with friends and family and on social media. Such photos may not be used for commercial purposes without prior written approval. As I walked up to the mansion entrance, I noticed large water-filled ponds with dozens of beautifully colored koi, which most people know as nishikigoi. A special event that our older daughter enjoyed twice was the annual Princesses at the Castle.

If you’re from out of town or are having a lot of out-of-town guests, I also think the limited hotel options might be an issue. However, the grounds are definitely gorgeous and unique, and for many brides that outweighs any potential negatives (and should!). The Kimberly-Shirk Association hosts a number of different events throughout the year at Kimberly Crest. They host regular guided tours of the house and grounds, as well as special events like Victorian tea parties and holiday celebrations. Built in 1897, the “castle” is a picturesque French chateau-style historical house museum.

Alfred Kimberly (a co-founder of the Kimberly-Clark Corporation) and Helen Cheney Kimberly in 1905. Their widowed daughter, Mary Kimberly Shirk, lived in the home from 1920 until her death in 1979.The house’s unique features include a French revival parlor complete with gilt furniture and silk damask wall coverings. Terraced Italian gardens, orange groves and ponds surround this historic landmark home.

The property is a registered California Historical Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. We offer special tours and ticket pricing for groups of all sizes and makeup, from school groups to seniors — Monday through Wednesday between 10 AM and 4 PM. Please fill out the form below to make reservations at least two weeks in advance. Groups with 30 or more guests will have a self lead tour with docents stationed in each room to answer questions. Kimberly Crest is located on Prospect Drive off Highland Avenue.

Additional fees for event security and gate monitoring apply and will be based on number of hours needed. An additional $500 refundable security deposit is required for events with theater seating as well as 3-hour event packages. All other packages require an additional refundable security deposit equivalent to twice the hourly rate of the rental package.

Patrons have also stated they have heard disembodied laughter, seen the ghost of a child running around one of the floors, and a woman in a long white dress. It is said that the ghosts of Andrew Jackson and Jean Lafitte are seen on the premises. People have witnessed everything from chairs, to bottles, to glasses moving about the bar on their own.

If you've been through the House of Shock in the past, expect to recognize some of the familiar props and costumes from that house too, along with the long lines. "This was excellent! Amazing location something I have never seen before. I love the old haunted house feel of it and the sets were amazing. If you are able to definitely check this place out!”Michael C. After going inside LaLaurie Mansion, discover the true story behind the Amityville Horror house. One of the key reasons people visit the city is to take in all the sites and learn about its rich history.

It shouldn't surprise many that many hauntings are attributed to the slaves that Madame LaLaurie kept on the property. There is a room in the LaLaurie Mansion where slaves were often kept - and reports of moaning coming from that room are common. Many people who have stood near the house have reported feeling as if they were taken over by negative energy. Today, the building called the Sultan's Palace is a collection of apartments - with many of the residents reporting supernatural and ghostly happenings. On our New Orleans Ghost Tours, we’ll take you on a trip into our haunted history, introducing you to the ghosts which still haunt the living today.

The tour guide paused, simply because she hadn't gotten to the part of the story about the little girl at all. This common story is communicated in a dance vocabulary of determined strides overcoming invisible burdens. Pierre Jourdan built his dream house on the edge of Jackson Square in the early 1800s, only to lose it in a poker game and then throw himself out of a second floor window. Seems like he’s still hanging around, a glimmer of shimmering light usually seen at the upstairs bar. A poltergeist throws stuff around the courtyard, shadows and voices appear and disappear. Something is up — which is why the owners make peace by keeping a table reserved for Mr. Jourdan set with bread and wine. For the rest of us, early October is the time we plan our visits to heart-pounding Halloween attractions around town. Wander through the halls of this allegedly cursed house that the infamous Delphine LaLaurie once resided in.

We booked the French Quarter Ghost Tour and it was so much fun. Katrice was an absolute professional when dealing with less than ideal participants and the general rowdy public. She was engaging, educational, and the highlight of our night. We loved hearing the history and the stories as we walked the quarter. But, more horrifying than the items you’ll view at the museum are the ghost stories that are told about the historic pharmacy. To this day, staff and patrons of the bar have reported all kinds of ghostly happenings. So when we started making a list of the most haunted places in New Orleans, we knew it had to be on it. Here at Ghost City, we were lucky enough to investigate the Museum a number of times before they closed.

Why is it that people can be spotted standing around snapping photos of the building on any given night? Below we have listed a few of the haunted locations we visit on our New Orleans Ghost Tours. There’s actually plenty to be scared of when you think of New Orleans’ haunted history -- that’s why the city is known for hosting one hell of a ghost tour. But if you find Karo-syrup-drenched actors scarier than New Orleans’ reality, well, the Crescent City has plenty of haunted house attractions, too.

Luckily for us (and you), you don't have to go far before you come across another great ghost story. The second floor bar at Muriel’s isn’t called the Seance Bar for nothing. The restaurant’s site has had a storied and checkered past, with the restless spirits to prove it.

A Guide to New Orleans’s Haunted Bars and Restaurants

After lingering in ruins, it was made into an integrated school, a conservatory of music, and a home for the homeless. When volunteers first arrived on the scene, they encountered a Black cook chained to the stove. She told them that she’d started the fire on purpose in hopes of ending her own life. Dating back to the 1880s, the Hotel Monteleone has undergone many renovations and expansions.

Cities of the Dead

The trouble is, considering the coronavirus contagion, attracting a lingering elbow-to-elbow crowd isn’t such a good idea. So for Halloween 2020, the Gentrys plan a different sort of display. Instead of a 20-minute animated musical show, their Ghost Manor will be a static display meant to be enjoyed momentarily.

Despite all of the ghost stories and paranormal happenings at the LaLaurie House, it would be folly to assume that all of them can be traced back to Madame LaLaurie and her mistreatment of slaves. In 1894, a tenant who lived at the LaLaurie Mansion (the house was converted into Apartments) was brutally murdered in his room. They found his belongings ransacked as if someone had gone through them. The police assumed that he was a victim of a robbery, even though nothing of value was found missing.

Ghost hunters have seen the man standing in the bar’s dark corners close to the fireplace. The ghost of a woman who killed herself is said to roam upstairs. Order one of the potent hurricanes, made with real juices, to calm your nerves. New Orleans Haunted Nightmare is a 25,000 square-foot haunted house attraction in Jefferson at the site of the former House of Shock. During the middle of the 19th century, there was an outbreak of yellow fever. In New Orleans, the total number of dead bodies became so great that residents began opening up their houses to act as makeshift morgues.

At the time of her death, Anne was estimated to be worth about $60 million. Now, if you ever watched the film adaptation of Anne’s novel Interview with the Vampire, you’ll remember that Louie lived on a huge plantation in New Orleans. The kitchen is slightly more contemporary than much of the first floor, featuring updated cabinetry, recessed lighting, and stainless-steel appliances.

"The bricked up window," she went on, "That's not where the little girl fell out of." Here at Ghost City Tours, we take a lot of pride in telling the stories of New Orleans' ghosts and hauntings. Our ghost tours all offer their unique take on the ghosts and haunted places in the French Quarter of New Orleans. New Orleans is known as "the most haunted city in America," and this city is crawling with haunting and ghostly spirits during Halloween. The haunted houses here in New Orleans are like no other, they're guaranteed to give you a frightfully good time.

Dig into the past of the *actually* haunted houses that line the streets of New Orleans.

The home at 1140 Royal Street in New Orleans looks elegant. But the story of LaLaurie Mansion — so named for its mistress, Madame Marie Delphine LaLaurie — is one of torture and death. Back in 1788, Pierre Antoine Lepardi Jourdan purchased the building.

The Nightmare promises to provide pumpkin spice-scented hand sanitizer, which is the most nightmarish thing we’ve ever heard. Despite the lingering contagion, a few frightening Halloween faves are returning with COVID-19 protocols in place. The Mortuary on Canal Street is using timed ticketing to eliminate lines and is providing laser guns to patrons to zap the ghouls at a safe distance.

By the next morning, they had nearly demolished the entire house. Details of the fire and the aftermath, as reported by eyewitnesses, emerged in the local newspapers during the following week. Madame LaLaurie was reviled as a "monster," a "demon in the shape of a woman," and "fury itself escaped from hell."

Jean Lafitte, a pirate, reportedly used the hotel to cover his smuggling business in its heyday. Patrons of the bar state if you are in Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop long enough to enjoy a drink or two, you will see Jean Lafitte right before your eyes, in his full pirate garb. Anyone who makes their way to Bourbon Street should stop at one of the most haunted places in New Orleans. Despite the nearly two centuries which have passed since the fire in 1834, the events of that year are still told today as though they occurred only just yesterday. Facts are spun into tales of brutality and torture until the truth is a muddled pool that can never be sorted.

There are other experiences that Bloody Mary's Tours provides, all equally haunting. Bloody Mary's Tours will take you through a haunted museum, which contains artifacts from haunted objects, true crime possessions, occult artifacts, and voodoo altars. This museum is said to have 13 resident ghosts and, on the tour, the aim to hunt down these spirits. This hotel is said to be New Orleans' oldest and most haunted hotel. Many guests have witnessed paranormal encounters, and sometimes, guests are too frightened to make it through a whole night at this hotel.

Today, the Pharmacy Museum is rumored to be one of the most haunted locations in New Orleans. It was during these epidemics that pharmacist Dr. Joseph Dupas used the dead yellow fever victims as decoys for the women (alive) that he conducted experiments upon upstairs in the house. Although the women were brought with a beating pulse to the Pharmacy, they certainly never left with one. The Musee Conti Wax Museum, unfortunately, will close its doors forever on January 31st, 2016.

Reports of running footsteps, a single piano note being struck — without a player in sight — and a chair being pulled across the floor are all documented. Believe it...or not...the ladies room is said to be haunted. Funny how all the noise in the next stall isn’t connected to a set of legs. Then again, drink enough hurricanes and anybody will levitate. Since 2005, Bernie Baxter's Traveling Sideshow is New Orleans' oldest haunted attraction.

To start, we can certainly throw out any accounts of slaves used for medical experiments. Almost all of those stories didn't even show up until the 1940s. If they were true, surely they would have been mentioned in previous newspapers or other various accounts. It isn't outside the possibility that the townspeople found slaves in poor conditions inside the LaLaurie House.

Tennessee governor plans to sign bill that would let teachers carry guns in schools

We have a large number of migrant young people who cross the southern border and looking for safety and sanctuary,” Shakeema North, interim executive director at Covenant House New York, said. The project aligns with and reflects New York State’s efforts to identify and address root causes of homelessness and at-risk youth unemployment. These grants will also support the retention of CHNY’s 236 existing jobs and the creation of 25 new jobs. For just $19 per month, you can provide meals, shelter and love to youth who sleep at a Covenant House each night. Reasons vary with every case, but there are commonalities as to why these runaways decide to flee their homes. “Often times there’s domestic violence or mental health issues in the family.

Opening of Covenant House New York’s Manhattan Facility

For over 45 years, Covenant House New York has served as the New York City’s largest home for young adults, ages 16 to 24, who have been left on the streets. Within the COVID-19 epicenter, the shelter faces some added challenges but has committed to giving these abandoned individuals new opportunities. Council Member Erik Bottcher said, "I've never facility seen a facility like this before. It's designed to be the kind of place you want to be, rather than a place you need to be. Combined with great programs and staff, this facility has the potential to transform countless lives." Lee, a Republican, had announced his support for the proposal just the day before while flanked by top Republican legislative leaders who had helped shepherd the bill through the GOP-dominant General Assembly. Despite having a board of directors, Covenant House's public face has tended to be its presidents. Father Bruce Ritter founded Covenant House and served as president from 1972 to his resignation in 1990.

Intake and Crisis Shelter

Throughout the 1970s, Covenant House continued to grow its social service programs in New York City; by 1980, Covenant House began expanding to other cities in the United States, and eventually Canada and Central America. Since its humble beginnings nearly fifty years ago, Covenant House has opened locations in 34 cities across five countries and changed the lives of millions of young people. Under CEO Bill Bedrossian’s current leadership, Covenant House International now serves more than 80,000 young people who experience homelessness each year.

For over 50 years, Covenant House New York (CHNY) has been a leader in providing residential services to vulnerable homeless, runaway, and exploited youth. As the largest provider of runaway and homeless youth services in New York City, CHNY serves over 1,600 young adult ages annually with an operating budget of over 30 million dollars. Our doors are open to all young people who need help, regardless of their race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression. We facilitate our services using trauma-informed principles to help homeless youth leave the streets and achieve independence. We also advocate for systemic change through public policy while promoting awareness of critical issues related to youth homelessness. Since 1972, we've opened our doors to more than 1.5 million young people experiencing homelessness and survivors of human trafficking.

During the final vote, protesters chanted “Blood on your hands” and many members of the public who oppose the bill harangued Republican lawmakers after the vote, leading House Speaker Cameron Sexton to order the galleries cleared. Supporters of new legislation to allow some teachers to carry firearms say it will make the state’s schools safer. This is our reaction to teachers and children being murdered in a school. Throughout the late 1970s, Covenant House expanded its social service programs in New York City and began to branch out to other cities in 1980. For the next four decades, Covenant House grew, led by Sister Mary Rose McGeady (1990–2003), Sister Tricia Cruise (2003–2008), Kevin Ryan (2009–2023), and Bill Bedrossian (2023-Present), opening centers in 34 cities in the United States, Canada, and Latin America.

He was succeeded by Sister Mary Rose McGeady, D.C., who served from 1990 to 2003. Patricia A. Cruise resigned her position as president of Covenant House International in 2008. Kevin Ryan, formerly the Child Advocate of New Jersey, became president in 2009, and retired from the position on February 12, 2023. William “Bill” Bedrossian, former CEO of Covenant House California, became CEO & president of Covenant House International on February 13, 2023.

Parenting support, counseling, and education workshops help new moms learn how to care for themselves and their child. As part of the FY 2023 Enacted Budget, Governor Hochul prioritized a statewide effort to address street homelessness and support New York’s most vulnerable. Furthermore, the Governor increased funding by $2 million for Runaway and Homeless Youth Programs to support the expansion of crisis and transitional living beds for vulnerable youth. As part of the FY 2023 Enacted Budget, Governor Hochul prioritized a statewide effort to address street homelessness and support New York's most vulnerable.

Some of our youth are eligible for asylum, others may be eligible for special immigrant juvenile status, which would normalize their lives. It’s an area where CHNY is working hard through the efforts of our in-house attorney and in collaboration with the City Bar Justice Center. When asked if the shelter has seen an uptick during these times, Downing responds that it hasn’t had an issue yet but is expecting an imminent surge. “We’re able to reconnect the youth with family when safe to do so...We expect in the coming months that we’ll see an increase in youth using our services as we did during the economic downturn in 2008,” adds Downing. Nancy Downing describes the changes made behind the shelter’s front doors in a recent interview with NBC New York. As most administrative staff are working from home, the organization has transformed their offices into wellness rooms, used for quarantining youth suffering with COVID-19.

More Than 4 Million Young People Will Experience Homelessness This Year

When a young person from Chad came to our shelter speaking one of the country’s 120 local languages, but neither French nor Arabic, the dominant languages, CHNY turned to Chad’s consulate in New York for help. The dynamic has changed over the ensuing months, as newcomers filter out throughout the city. Today, they arrive from a greater diversity of countries, most notably from African countries. CHNY saw the largest influx of young people from the migrant trail last summer, when southern governors began busing asylum seekers to New York City and other destinations far from the southern U.S. border.

As many as 4.2 million young people will experience a period of homelessness this year in the U.S. alone. The causes of homelessness are complex, and many of the most vulnerable young people in our communities face the greatest risk. "Some of the youth advisors really connect with you. They helped me with my mental health a lot." Part of the solution has been to steer youth toward alternatives that help them advance their education and language learning, Lisa says.

Ritter resigned but was never charged with sexual abuse.[6] Soon after, more accusations surfaced. Four men came forward publicly claiming to have been in sexual relationships with Ritter for years, including multiple who stated the relationships started when they were minors receiving services through Covenant House. A report later prepared for Covenant House counted a total of 15 reported cases of sexual acts between Ritter and youth and young adults who were living or volunteering at the shelter. Mental health support was available as they set up an evacuation center nearby.

You can make a difference in the lives of youth overcoming homelessness by donating your time and money to Covenant House. "They provided me with immediate services and helped me to understand how to navigate my life. Before I was living in stress and fear." In 2021, over 4.2 million young people experienced homelessness of some kind.

Adrian Gately, Patricia Kennedy, and Paul Frazier joined him to create the Covenant Community. In 1972, Covenant House was officially incorporated with its first intake center established at 504 LaGuardia Place. “We provide housing to young people who have been disconnected from their families, and young people who have been trafficked.

You have the power to change a life

Every year, more than 5,000 of these young people lose their lives to the streets. Your gift will help us continue to provide our youth with a safe place to sleep, clean clothes, food, and ultimately, a place to call home. Why would a man of good means marry a girl of little means, a girl without a dowry?

CHNY and COVID-19

Rights of Passage (ROP) is a longer-term (up to 24 months) residential program for young adults who have transitioned out of a crisis shelter. Young people in our ROP Program work closely with case managers and social workers to create personalized plans that will ensure their success on moving into independent, permanent housing. Our Welcome Center and Youth Shelter team lovingly welcomes youth and meets their immediate needs for a hearty meal, a shower, fresh clothes, and a safe place to sleep. We then help young people develop a personal plan, with health, employment, education, and other goals. In February 1990, Covenant House founder and President Bruce Ritter was forced to step down in the wake of allegations of sexual and financial misconduct, beginning with the accusations of Kevin Kite, who accused Ritter of sexual abuse.

Soon she hears her mother's sniffles change to steady breathing, then to the softest of snores, which in the girl's mind seem to impose order on the scattered sounds of the night, from the wooden walls exhaling the day's heat to the scuffing sound of the dog in the sandy courtyard outside. "The saddest day of a girl's life is the day of her wedding," her mother says. Lee initially asked lawmakers to keep guns away from people deemed a danger to themselves or others in response to the shooting, the Republican supermajority ignored that request. Even in a state as conservative as Tennessee, the reaction to the bill has included unease and disappointment. The skepticism has come not just from those who want tighter restrictions on firearms but also from some who generally believe strongly in gun rights. Their reluctance was rooted in doubts about the wisdom of placing such a daunting responsibility on teachers and other school workers.

Opening doors for homeless and trafficked youth

But young people who come from other countries need health coverage in order to get X-rays and other treatments. Lisa says CHNY staff have become experts in identifying and applying for the appropriate health coverage. NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee teachers and staff will be allowed to carry concealed handguns on public school grounds under legislation signed into law by Gov. Bill Lee on Friday. Lee on Thursday highlighted the legislation's requirements that faculty and staff members wishing to carry concealed handguns on school grounds complete a minimum of 40 hours of approved training specific to school policing every year. They also must obtain written authorization from law enforcement, he noted. Young people can access short-term emergency care through CHNY’s street outreach program, drop-in services, and emergency shelter.

Programs & Services

Downing says many of the 250 staff members are still working on-site with the transitional living programs. Downing shares that the shelter has treated 10 young people with the virus so far. Located on the premises is a federally qualified health center where medical staff can attend to those quarantined in the shelter. "Molay?" her father's only brother had said the previous day, to her surprise. Of late he wasn't in the habit of using the endearment molay—daughter—with her. "We found a good match for you!" His tone was oily, as though she were four, not twelve.

“The other service point that has been a learning curve for us is labor trafficking,” she notes. CHNY has a great deal of experience supporting young survivors of sex trafficking or commercial sexual exploitation. But among our newcomers, there is a high prevalence, she says, of having been labor trafficked in their home country or along their journey.

Covenant House then acquired a group of buildings on West 44th Street and moved its administrative offices to the new location, which moved into a retrofitted cluster of buildings on West 41st Street in 1979. “We had an all hands on deck approach last night to make our new residents comfortable,” Julia Einbond, executive director of Covenant House New Jersey, said. “The level of anxiety that most of them were experiencing is just, you know, exacerbated — some of the feelings that they already had, you know, and especially with the things that led to them to become homeless in the first place,” North said. We can guide you through our programs and answer any questions about the process right now. If there's anyone in your life who may be a victim of trafficking, find help below. If you have been the victim of a crime or need emergency assistance, call or contact your local police department below.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee said Thursday that he planned to sign a bill state legislators sent to his desk this week that would allow school staff members to carry concealed handguns on school grounds. In the late 1960s, the Reverend Bruce Ritter, a Franciscan priest, retired from his job as a professor at Manhattan College to begin a new ministry serving the city's poor. Joined by colleague Father James Fitzgibbon, he moved into a dilapidated tenement building in New York City's East Village. With volunteers, including friends, former students, and neighbors, he began an effort to help homeless and runaway young people. By 1970, Father Fitzgibbon had moved on to other ministries, but Father Ritter remained.

In 2018, we opened our new Family Covenant Program, which provides permanent housing support to 30 young adult families. In 2019, our Rapid Re-Housing Program opened to provide immediate permanent housing to an additional 50 youth. As of 2024, Covenant House New York provides over 75 permanent housing placements for youth experiencing homelessness.

For our LGBT youth, they get kicked out of the home because parents aren’t willing or able to deal with it in the moment,” said Downing. In the late 1960s, a group of committed East Village residents – colleagues, friends, Manhattan College students, and neighbors – came together to provide a refuge for homeless and runaway youth. Eventually, the group’s work to shelter vulnerable young people gained momentum and became the Covenant Community.

Staff began working with city and state agencies, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and with other Covenant House locations to find safe housing for their young people at a variety of different shelters. To address this challenge and ensure a community where all youth feel welcomed and heard, CHNY provided focused training for staff, in-person and electronic language courses for both staff and youth, and handheld translation devices, and we increased the number of our bilingual staff. Around the shelter signage now appears in multiple languages, including images and symbols in case a youth’s language is not represented. Through the pandemic, the Covenant House New York continues their education and workforce readiness classes.

We're always trying to bring you more amazing hotels, more quickly. But not every hotel can immediately connect their reservation system with ours. For those properties, we provide real-time rates and availability via a partnership with Booking.com. Our Ruby Suite is named for the Guild’s ruby butterfly pin, a sparkling piece of jewelry the women of the Guild circulated for years amongst themselves as a talisman of seniority in the organization. A little jewel box of a space carved out of the home’s former billiard room, the suite features enveloping, soft velvets and luxurious textures, as well as the original blush-pink millwork wainscoting and Art Nouveau chandelier.

Lokal Hotel - Old City

In their latest statement from Sunday, university officials said they were “heartbroken” by the scuffles that continue to break out between the protesters and counter-protesters on campus. A woman told the local outlet that she was injured after the protesters and counter-protesters clashed in a heated standoff as security tried and failed to keep the two groups apart. The Taser incident was only one of several on Monday, with police also detaining another man walking his dog on campus after officers found a sword on the ground near him, Fox 11 reports. The Ritz-Carlton, Philadelphia’s Broad Street address is smack-dab in Center City, and the neoclassical bank building from the 1900s is impossible to miss. Those just passing by, however, won’t get to experience the classically appointed guestrooms or Chef Richard Sandoval’s Latin-American menu at Aqimero (think tuna ceviche, cheesesteak empanadas, and short rib al carbon). We independently evaluate all recommended products and services.

America celebrates the year-long centennial of women’s suffrage. After many months of rehabilitation, refurbishing and painstaking redesign, the Guild House Hotel opens as a boutique “invisible service” hotel, paying tribute to the Guild’s remarkable history. Lydia Mansel is a travel journalist and former Philadelphia resident. She also took performance Travel + Leisure’s It List awards into consideration. Each featured hotel also adheres to our core T+L Hotel Values, which ensure readers are always presented with high-quality recommendations and trusted reviews.

There’s also The Rittenhouse Spa & Club, where both guests and members can take advantage of fitness classes, personal training sessions, and the sunny Atrium Pool. Additionally, there’s an overall prestige surrounding the hotel that makes any Philly trip, no matter the length or the occasion, feel infinitely more special. My first introduction to The Rittenhouse was Library Bar, the property’s intimate watering hole set among shelves of rare and fine books, many of which detail Philadelphia’s storied history.

Select areas of the city, most notably, Old City, still have historic cobblestoned streets, which are best traversed with supportive walking shoes. The highlight of my stay, though, had to be the Underground Spa. As the name suggests, you’ll head below ground level to access the relaxing sanctuary and its various services. I opted to recharge with the Alpine Arnica Deep Tissue Massage, which was preceded by a quick dip in the indoor, heated pool. If you’re in the mood for excitement rather than relaxation, you’ll find a heavy dose of fun (and excellent Philadelphia views) at The Assembly Rooftop Lounge. Just be sure to reserve your table in advance; the bar can get crowded.
