Visit

kimberly crest house & gardens

I have a purpose in mind, such as the Orange Street Alley, and go there to experience it. The current price (at the time of writing) is $15.00 for adults, $12.00 for seniors/active military/veteran/student, and $5.00 for children ages 6-12. The architecture of the mansion has been described in different ways. It is at once a French château-style 3-story home with tall towers and turrets, and also a Victorian mansion as is common to Redlands, California. The Carriage House was built for the family horses and carriages and had a small apartment on the top floor for the caretaker. In 1897 the cost to construct both the home and Carriage House was $10,000.

Price is rounded up to the nearest thousand and includes tax and gratuity. In 1963 there was a community effort to raise money to match a federal grant to purchase Prospect Park (a 39 acre botanical garden east of and adjacent to Kimberly Crest) for the City of Redlands. To motivate support for this worthwhile project, Mrs. Shirk promised to give her home to the “people of Redlands” if the needed money was raised. The following year the Kimberly-Shirk Association was formed, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and sharing Kimberly Crest. After Mr. Kimberly passed away, the Kimberly’s daughter Mary Kimberly-Shirk had a rose garden built to ease her mother’s grief and named it “Grandmother’s Rose Garden”.

Upon her death in 1979, by her wishes, Mary Kimberly Shirk donated the home to “the people of Redlands” and established the Kimberly-Shirk Association to run the home and gardens to this day. The property was sold, in 1905, to members of the Kimberly family (John Alfred Kimberly, and his wife, Helen Cheney Kimberly), known for co-founding the Kimberly-Clark paper company. This is a sprawling estate with beautiful gardens, interesting history, and plenty of photo ops. The third floor, which is not included on the public tour, has additional bedrooms and a screened sleeping porch that would have been used in the hot summer months. Kimberly Crest, a picturesque French chateau style home built in 1897, is a well-preserved example of the Victorian Era in California.

Terence Hernstrom, director of gardens and grounds, revives and designs the breath-taking gardens today. The gardens include never ending Mediterranean borders, cascading fountains, lily and koi ponds, multiple terraces, curved stairways and engulfing orange groves - all reminiscent of Renaissance Italy. Begin your happily-ever-after at our enchanting 125-year-old landmark conveniently situated adjacent to beautiful Prospect Park. With acres of Italian gardens and the Victorian era French Chateau in the background, Kimberly Crest is an unforgettable setting for your special day. The 7,000 square foot, three-story chateau sits on a six and one quarter acre estate two miles south of downtown Redlands. The house’s unique features include a French revival parlor complete with gilt furniture and silk damask wall coverings.

The Kimberly Crest House Tour includes a docent guided tour of the first and second floors of the petite chateau while guests learn about the families of Kimberly Crest. The tours also includes a visit to the Carriage House to see the latest of the rotating exhibits anzd end in the Carriage House Gift Shop. Kimberly Crest House & Gardens is a 6-acre estate in Redlands, California featuring a Victorian Chateau and Italian Renaissance styled gardens. In 1905 the home was purchased by Helen Cheney Kimberly and her husband John Alfred Kimberly. Mrs. Kimberly added the gardens and decorated the interior of the home as you find it today. After the Kimberlys’ death, the estate was inherited by their daughter, Mary Kimberly-Shirk.

Entry inside the house can only be accessed if a group tour or a grand entrance are added on. In 1963 there was a community effort to raise money to match a Federal grant to purchase Prospect Park (a 39-acre botanical park east of and adjacent to Kimberly Crest) for the City of Redlands. To motivate support for this worthwhile project, Mrs. Shirk promised to give her home to the “people of Redlands” if the needed money was raised – and the incentive worked, with the park being acquired in 1968. This French château-style Victorian mansion is a registered California Historical Landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It seems Mrs. Shirk had a strong sense of community and purpose. Before her passing, she challenged the city of Redlands to find the cash to purchase the land around the estate and turn it into botanical gardens for the citizens to enjoy.

The second floor was the personal living area for the family and includes a mezzanine with two bedrooms on each side as well as a conservatory.

For those requiring special accommodations, they may be driven to the top of the house to be dropped off. We encourage informal picture-taking using personal devices to share with friends and family and on social media. Such photos may not be used for commercial purposes without prior written approval. As I walked up to the mansion entrance, I noticed large water-filled ponds with dozens of beautifully colored koi, which most people know as nishikigoi. A special event that our older daughter enjoyed twice was the annual Princesses at the Castle.

If you’re from out of town or are having a lot of out-of-town guests, I also think the limited hotel options might be an issue. However, the grounds are definitely gorgeous and unique, and for many brides that outweighs any potential negatives (and should!). The Kimberly-Shirk Association hosts a number of different events throughout the year at Kimberly Crest. They host regular guided tours of the house and grounds, as well as special events like Victorian tea parties and holiday celebrations. Built in 1897, the “castle” is a picturesque French chateau-style historical house museum.
