Rights of Passage (ROP) is a longer-term (up to 24 months) residential program for young adults who have transitioned out of a crisis shelter. Young people in our ROP Program work closely with case managers and social workers to create personalized plans that will ensure their success on moving into independent, permanent housing. Our Welcome Center and Youth Shelter team lovingly welcomes youth and meets their immediate needs for a hearty meal, a shower, fresh clothes, and a safe place to sleep. We then help young people develop a personal plan, with health, employment, education, and other goals. Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee said Thursday that he planned to sign a bill state legislators sent to his desk this week that would allow school staff members to carry concealed handguns on school grounds. In the late 1960s, the Reverend Bruce Ritter, a Franciscan priest, retired from his job as a professor at Manhattan College to begin a new ministry serving the city's poor. Joined by colleague Father James Fitzgibbon, he moved into a dilapidated tenement building in New York City's East Village. With volunteers, including friends, former students, and neighbors, he began an effort to help homeless and runaway young people. By 1970, Father Fitzgibbon had moved on to other ministries, but Father Ritter remained.
In 2018, we opened our new Family Covenant Program, which provides permanent housing support to 30 young adult families. In 2019, our Rapid Re-Housing Program opened to provide immediate permanent housing to an additional 50 youth. As of 2024, Covenant House New York provides over 75 permanent housing placements for youth experiencing homelessness.
For our LGBT youth, they get kicked out of the home because parents aren’t willing or able to deal with it in the moment,” said Downing. In the late 1960s, a group of committed East Village residents – colleagues, friends, Manhattan College students, and neighbors – came together to provide a refuge for homeless and runaway youth. Staff began working with city and state agencies, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and with other Covenant House locations to find safe housing for their young people at a variety of different shelters. To address this challenge and ensure a community where all youth feel welcomed and heard, CHNY provided focused training for staff, in-person and electronic language courses for both staff and youth, and handheld translation devices, and we increased the number of our bilingual staff. Around the shelter signage now appears in multiple languages, including images and symbols in case a youth’s language is not represented. Through the pandemic, the Covenant House New York continues their education and workforce readiness classes.
